Charlie Jasmine & Shahfina (CJS)

Jasmine leads the Commercial Litigation & Arbitration and Employment practice at CJS. Her areas of focus include commercial litigation & arbitration, employment matters (both contentious and advisory), shipping, and insurance disputes.

 

She previously practiced at a leading international law firm, which has garnered international recognition from The Legal 500, Chambers & Partners, Benchmark Litigation, Asian Legal Business, IFLR1000, among others. During her time there, she was part of the Litigation Department that was named Litigation Law Firm of the Year by Asian Legal Business in 2023.

 

She is a commercial litigator who has represented clients before all levels of the Malaysian courts and arbitral tribunals. She regularly advises and represents clients such as multi-national companies, government-linked corporations, listed and private companies, financial institutions, private equity funds and others.

 

Thanks to her outstanding academic record—achieving straight A1s in all subjects during her secondary education—Jasmine was awarded a full scholarship for her undergraduate studies. She later graduated as the Best Performing Direct Entrant Student in the LL.B. programme at her university and was also awarded scholarship for her studies of Certificate in Legal Practice at Advanced Tertiary College.

 

Outside of legal practice, Jasmine is a passionate volunteer with World Vision Malaysia for over 10 years. Always up for a challenge, she is into sports of all kinds – with a deep passion for rock climbing.

Notable Experience

 

  • Won Marine Insurance Claim of RM7.2 million for MNC: Successfully represented a multi-national company (MNC) in claiming loss of cargo during export worth RM7.2 million under a marine insurance policy. The decision is reported in Sakura Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd v Allianz General Insurance Company (M) Bhd [2025] MLJU 1037.

  • Enforced International Arbitral Award of USD 8.5 million in Malaysia: Successfully registered a foreign arbitral award in the sum of USD 8.5 million as a court order in Malaysia for a United Arab Emirates company and successfully defended the application to set aside such court order. Established a precedent in Malaysia on the issue of whether a foreign arbitral award is final and binding under Section 39(1)(a)(vii) of the Arbitration Act 2005. The decision is reported in IPL Middle East DMCC v KNM Process Systems Sdn Bhd [2022] MLJU 136.

  • Registered Foreign Judgment of RM3 million in Malaysia: Successfully registered an English judgment in Malaysia for the sum of RM3 million for a UK company and effectively defended the application to set aside the registered foreign judgment. The decision is reported in 2Wtrade LLP v Zepto Express Berhad [2023] MLJU 386.

  • Warehouse Loss Recovery for Australian MNC: Successfully represented a multi-national company based in Australia in a claim for loss of goods valued at around RM1.1 million stored in warehouse in Labuan. The decision is reported in Blastone Asia Sdn Bhd & Anor v Tunas Rakyat Sdn Bhd [2025] MLJU 1203.

  • Group Retrenchment Defence in Employment Claims: Represented multiple companies under a Chinese educational group against ex-employees’ claims of unfair dismissal due to a group retrenchment exercise.

  • Defended RM7 million Fraud Claim against Bank: Defended a bank against a claim for breach of contract and negligence in relation to alleged fraudulent transactions in the sum of RM7 million.

  • Successfully Defended RM1.7 million claim in Gas Supply Arbitration: Successfully defended a company under a multinational formwork supply group against an arbitration in claim of around RM1.7 million in the Asian International Arbitration Centre for a gas supply contract dispute.

  • Cross-Border Fraud Claim of USD 2 million: Represented a client to initiate claim for USD 2 million against a German registered company for, among others, fraudulent misrepresentation, tort of deceit, and wrongful termination of an agreement to distribute medical products in Malaysia.

  • Shareholder dispute: Defended a subsidiary company of a company based in China and individual shareholders against a minority oppression suit. Represented a shareholder of a leading real estate agent company in claiming against other shareholders for minority oppression.
